Filing a change of address feels like closing the loop on a move. It is closer to setting a timer. How long does USPS actually forward your mail?

The wind-down is where people get caught. After the twelve-month window closes, First-Class mail is not forwarded and not delivered. No. A USPS forwarding order applies only to mail moving through USPS.

What happens to mail addressed to other people in the household?
It depends on which type of order you filed. An individual order forwards mail only for the exact name listed, a family order covers household members sharing the same last name, and a business order applies to a company.
